2" (for standard swamp coolers) or 3" thick rigid cell media pads have smaller flute sizes (~3/16" flute vs the standard ~1/4" flute height) to increase performance - with a distribution header retrofitted into an existing cooler will give you longer lasting (usually 3-5 times longer life expectancy) more consistent performance in your swamp cooler.
