New Evaporative Cooling and Humidification Media Start-Up Guide
You have received new Evaporative Cooling and Humidification Media. This guide has been developed to assist you with installation and start-up procedures to maximize performance of your media. We suggest that prior to installation, the new pads be thoroughly washed with clean water to remove excess manufacturing cutting dust from the pad. If you are unable to wash the pads prior to installation, fill the cooler’s sump with clean water and operate the recirculation water pump for a period without any air flow through the pads. Then prior to start-up of the fan, empty and re-fill the sump with fresh water. This will discard any manufacturing particles from the system. With any installation of new media it is recommended that you clean the sump. The cooling media acts as an air washer where dirt and dust particles are cleaned out of the air stream and deposited in the sump. Draining and flushing of the sump may not be enough. Drain the sump completely, spray the sump with water to break up deposits in the sump and allow to drain. Some sumps may require a brushing process to remove debris. Disinfecting the sump is useful as long as the disinfectant is completely drained and washed out of the system prior to operation. (Disinfectants are often oxidizing biocides which tend to prematurely leach the protective resins out of the media.) Clear water distribution pumps of debris and obstructions and check and clean the water distribution system. The distribution system should provide an even distribution of water flow to the media to entirely wet the pads from side to side and front to back.
“Media Installation 101”
Media installed incorrectly can cause excessive water carryover into the air stream, for this reason it is important to install the media in the proper orientation. The figure to the right, illustrates the proper installation with the 45° angle corrugation pointing downward into the incoming air stream.
When the installation is complete, the media orientation may be checked by using a pencil. Place your pencil into the media’s 45° angle flute. If the air flow is hitting you in the face, the pencil should be pointing upwards at the 45° angle. If the air flow is hitting you in the back of the head as you face the media, the pencil should be pointing 45° downwards.
